Half Marathon

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Eric and I ran marathons together. It's how we met. And, we spent our Saturday mornings for years running long distances and then staring at each other, wondering what to do with all of our free time. In an effort to get a little bit of that back, we decided to start running again on Saturdays with our old running group. And, we needed a goal--the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon and the Army Ten Miler.

So, we trained all summer, having a sitter come early Saturday mornings to watch the kids for a few hours. It felt so good to be out there, although we were out there for much longer, being older and slower. Unfortunately, about halfway through the season, Eric's knee started giving him problems, which has sucked for him, but I've kept up with things.

The half marathon was this weekend. While it was lonely running without Eric, it was amazing to be doing a distance race again. And, while my pictures from the race are pretty blurry and terrible, I'm posting them here anyway. I am printing out this blog, year by year, for the kids to have as a baby/memory book. And, some day, a million years from now, I want them to know that their parents were strong and awesome.

The race was really hard, mostly because of the oppressive humidity at the start. But, Eric, his mom, and the kids were out on the course, cheering me on. I saw them at miles 6.5 and 11. Seeing the kids and hearing them cheer was one of my top 5 moments in life.

And, of course, having Eric run to give me Gatorade and M&Ms was fantastic, especially because that's how we "met," when I gave him M&Ms during the Marine Corps Marathon in 2002. Life comes full circle.
